Backyard Dreams

One of the worst parts of building a new home is not having a yard. We didn’t budget for that in our loan, hoping that we would have extra money at the end and put it in this summer. Well, we didn’t have extra, but we have saved and plan on putting a yard in–it’s just taking awhile because our yard is pretty big and we want to save money and do a lot of the work ourselves, which means we have to wait until the cows are all on the mountain and we (okay, mostly DG!) has time. I met with a landscape designer to help us get the layout figured out, and now I’m getting really impatient. I want the dust and weeds gone, and I’d love a place for the kids to play.

Here are some backyards I’m lusting after.

I love the placement of these rocks with greenery mixed in between. My goal is mountainy, but simple to care for.

I love this fire pit area…actually, I think I like the look of the house too, but I can’t wait to have a fire pit we can hang out around.

The purple plant in the middle is called a Russian Sage. They are one of my favorites because of their pretty color and they bloom all summer.

Can we all agree that this seating area looks amazing? Obviously it’s too late for a fireplace to go in my patio and we would actually never use one, but this looks so inviting and comfortable.

I love how the covered and uncovered patios flow. Mine are going to go around a corner so I’m not sure how easy that will be to achieve, but I love this look.

What is your favorite element of your own backyard? Do you have any tips or advice before I really get started? What is something different that you wish you had done?

  1. Ooooh love outdoor landscapes!

  2. These backyards are wonderful, I have always admired how the backyards are embracing the nature and giving refreshment to every house. Great photos!

  3. I wish I could have at least one detail from those pictures in my backyard! I never knew how costly maintaining a backyard is, especially just grass! My hubby does all that because I can’t barely keep a plant alive to save my life but these picture ideas are awesome!

It’s so costly to put in and maintain. I want as little grass as possible because I’ll be the one responsible for mowing it every week. You’re lucky your husband does it!

  4. We love all the purple flowers we just planted. It’s amazing how little changes can make a big difference!

  5. Living an apartment the past almost 5 years, I’m desperately wishing for a backyard!! Especially in the summertime – nothing like hanging out with friends and grilling under twinkle lights. ๐Ÿ™‚

The nice thing about apartment living is that you probably have a common area you can use and don’t have to take care of though ๐Ÿ˜‰ I did enjoy that back in my apartment days! Especially in the winter when there was someone else responsible for snow removal.

  6. It’s so nice to have an outdoor space all your own! We have the acreage, but have never done anything to it ๐Ÿ˜›

Do you have natural vegetation? If we don’t do anything I’m going to continue living in a dust bowl!

  7. That seating are DOES look amazing! Super cozy looking, I love it!
